Douala is located in the heart of Cameroon’s western coast and is a city of many faces and many cultures. From the moment you reach Douala, you are immersed in an atmosphere of productive activity.  The entrepreneurial spirit of the people is evident from the beginning of any visit to the country and pervades all things. The only thing that supersedes the work ethic of the people is the law of hospitality, which is shown around the city in the general warmth of the various communities.

Douala is the Capital of Cameroon’s Littoral Province and enjoys the distinction of being the commercial capitol of the nation. It is an equatorial city and therefore enjoys balmy temperatures and high humidity year round.  Because the city handles the vast majority of Cameroon’s trade, there are numerous markets which function both as resources for the local people and interesting attractions for tourists. Everything from the latest electronics to the delectable fruit of the region is available amongst the wares of various street vendors throughout Douala’s markets.

While there are many characteristics which make Douala attractive, there are also many obstacles present in the infrastructure and environment of the city that lessen the quality of life. The growth of HIV infection and the lack of functioning health mechanisms is a daunting barrier to the advancement of the population. The health of the upcoming generations will depend on development of the services in Cameroon.
